for more than 20 years, the buffalo soldiers research museum has collected, preserved, and provided exhibits documenting the african american military experience. we have a special interest in military artifacts from 1866 to 1945 when the buffalo soldier regiments were active.  these regiments included individuals who served in the 38th, 39th 40th, 41st, 24th, and 25th infantries as well as the 9th, 10th, 27th, and 28th horse cavalries.

an important focus of the buffalo soldier research museum is research. the library houses more than 2,000 books, magazines and publications. in addition, the library collection includes photographs, art, film, and literature with personal stories about the buffalo soldiers and other african american historical experiences.

when visiting the museum, one can investigate, study, and examine the collections.  books and materials are non-circulating and cannot be borrowed from the library. these resources serve as reference documents and are often used in public exhibits.

creating a museum is a physical and intellectual adventure. it is exciting but daunting work especially when the structure, artifacts, and histories are not in a central location. a museum is a building, place, or institution devoted to the acquisition, conservation, study, exhibition, and educational interpretation of objects having scientific, historical, or artistic value. the buffalo soldiers research museum will also incorporate the “essence” of the people who used the artifacts.
